Why you need this course:
After completing this course, you´ll be able to prepare a scope of loss for building damage and to evaluate estimates on claims.

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the type of building construction, fire detection and suppression systems, and intruder alarm systems in a given claim situation.
  • Identify and describe the parts of the basic building structure.
  • Describe the elements of, and correct procedure for, taking a scope.
  • Explain how to determine each of the following elements of cost contained in an estimate:
    • Materials
    • Labor and employer’s burden
    • Tools and equipment
    • Overhead and profit
    • Direct costs
  • Explain the labor and materials method of estimating and its application.
  • Explain the unit cost method of estimating and its application.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of computerized estimating services.
  • Explain how estimates are calculated in situations involving the following:
    • Demolition
    • Debris removal
    • Small losses
    • Large losses
  • Explain two reasons for, and how to negotiate, differences in estimates with a contractor.
  • Explain how various insurance policy provisions affect an estimate.
  • Given a property damage claim, prepare the basic estimate.
  • Create a residential construction estimate for each of the following:
    • Concrete and masonry
    • Frame carpentry
    • Drywall
    • Roofing
    • Painting and wallpaper
    • Siding
  • Give examples of causes of damage, and explain the methods of repair and factors affecting repairs for each of the following:
    • Concrete and masonry
    • Frame carpentry
    • Drywall
    • Roofing
    • Painting and wallpaper
    • Siding
  • Create a gross area and net area estimate for painting a room.
  • Describe the elements of, and damage that can occur to, the following systems:
    • Electrical
    • Plumbing
    • Heating and cooling
